Thumbprint Cookies

Ingredients:

1/2 cup shortening
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup brown sugar
2 eggs, separated
1 t. vanilla
2 cups flour
1/2 t. salt
1 cup ground walnuts

Cream butter, shortening and sugar. Beat in egg yolks and vanilla. Stir in flour and salt. Chill dough.
Roll dough into 1 1/2 inch balls and dip into a mixture of egg whites and 2 t. water. Roll in nuts and place on a greased cookie sheet. Press thumb into centers to make depression. Bake at 350 10 - 12 minutes. Cool, fill with jam, jelly or icing.
